TAFE Illawarra’s Pathway to Work or study courses are a great starting point if you want to get back into work or study but need to develop your skills and confidence. Our courses can assist you to prepare for further education or training, improve your reading; writing or maths skills update your existing skills for work, or develop your career plan.
No matter what your starting point, you will work with experienced teachers and coordinators who will help you to develop your individual pathway. All of our courses will help you to develop strong employability skills such as communication, working in a team, problem solving, managing your time and using technology.
Pathways
Entry points and pathways vary for each person undertaking study in this area. Courses range from Certificate I through to Certificate IV.
Some students may choose to complete a basic computer literacy class prior to undertaking a Certificate II in Information Technology or a Certificate I in Preparation for Work and Study prior to completing a Certificate III in Aged Care.
Some courses are offered specifically for Women returning to work, with work experience playing a vital role. In these courses, women have the opportunity to identify their skills and interests and develop realistic career plans. Women’s courses are generally held during school hours and focus on building confidence as well as work skills.
Another pathway is the Certificate II in Preparation for Vocational and Further Study. This is an important qualification for those who need a Year 10 equivalent for entry into further education.
For all those who wish to prepare for a university degree to become teachers, nurses or even forensic scientists – to name just a few , the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation is an excellent choice.
Learning Options
A range of Pathway to Work or Study courses are offered at all TAFE Illawarra Campuses. Some are offered off Campuses or online through Adult Basic Education, Outreach and General Education.
Once you are enrolled in one of our courses, you may also take advantage of support services. Learner support is available if you require assistance with assignments, research and study skills, or flexible and online learning materials. Computer and internet access is available and qualified staff will provide you with assistance.
Recognition
We also support individuals to gain formal recognition for the knowledge and skills that that they have gained in the workplace or as a result of other informal or unstructured learning experiences. This recognition, if granted, can count towards completion of a qualification. We can develop a program to meet your own personal needs which could include practical assessment in the workplace.

TAFE Illawarra also has a range of support services available including support for students with disabilities, extensive library and information services, career advice and counselling, children’s centres and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. No matter what your circumstances are, TAFE Illawarra can assist you in many ways.
TAFE Illawarra is the right choice for you if you want to develop a broad range of skills to gain employment in the dynamic and creative field of communication and media. Our courses offer training in creative, business and academic writing and editing, marketing, project management, interpersonal skills and technical and conceptual skills.
These skills can lead to employment in a variety of roles such as an Arts officer, publicist, community development officer, media officer, assistant producer, or corporate communication officer. These roles could be across a wide range of industries such as hospitality, local government, journalism in print, TV or radio.
You may choose to start with the Certificate IV in Communication and Media which usually takes one year to complete.
You may then decide to go on to the Diploma of Communication and Media which can also take one year to complete. The Diploma level qualification prepares you for roles with greater accountability and responsibility.
Some universities will offer a credit for the successful competition of the Diploma level qualification and this may be equivalent to one year of study, thus reducing the time taken to complete a Degree.
Courses are offered both part time and full time and can include online and flexible learning options. Guest speakers and industry visits as well as practical projects ensure that the course is linked to current industry practice. An industry project or work experience component of the course also prepares you for working in the industry.
Communication and Media courses are offered at TAFE Illawarra at Nowra, Moss vale and Wollongong Campuses.
