Our courses start at Certificate I and progress to Advanced Diploma level. For example if you choose to commence your studies with the Certificate II in Business you might then wish to undertake the Certificate III in Business Administration, then proceed to the Certificate IV in Business. At that point you may decide to specialise in Human Resources, Marketing or Management and go on to complete the Diploma and/or the Advanced Diploma qualifications.

We also have articulation arrangements with several Universities which provide you with an opportunity to speed up your university studies by gaining credit for qualifications you have completed with us at Diploma and Advanced Diploma level.

If you have extensive supervisory or management experience you may wish to enrol in the Graduate Certificate and the Graduate Diploma of Management program. This two-year program provides you with an opportunity to enrol simultaneously with TAFE Illawarra and Charles Sturt University. By completing of these two qualifications you receive credit for eight subjects in the Master of Management Program leaving you only four subjects to complete to gain your Master of Management qualification.

Are you looking for a career in Early Childhood Education?  TAFE Illawarra is the right choice for you.  The future looks promising when you enrol at TAFE Illawarra.

Careers:

Early childhood courses are designed to include learning opportunities to support your career working with children.  There are two courses on offer at TAFE Illawarra - the Certificate III in Children’s Services and the Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care).

Careers for Certificate III graduates include child-care workers, child care assistants in child care services including out of school hours care, and in family day care.  This course is also appropriate for people who would like to work as a Nanny or Babysitter.  You will have developed a good knowledge and understanding of how to plan for individual children's profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, support their play which enables them to achieve developmental outcomes.

Graduates who complete the Diploma qualification can work as a qualified child care worker, as an authorised supervisor and/or as a director of an early childhood service. You will have developed the skills, knowledge and attitudes relevant to meet the intellectual language, physical, social and emotional needs of children in centre-based care. You will also have learned about ethical work practices and the legal requirements of the child care sector.

Pathways

There are no formal entry requirements for Certificate III in Children’s services course, however please note the minimum age for employment in this industry in NSW is 18 years.

All people wishing to work in a licensed Children’s Service must have, or be working towards, the Certificate III qualification by January 2014.
There are strict entry requirements for the Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care). Students enrolling into the Diploma must have completed 12 units of the Certificate III qualification. The Certificate and Diploma qualifications contain units of competency which are common to other sectors. You will gain credit for these units if you choose to enrol in qualifications for other sectors in the Community Services Training Package.
The Diploma course may gain you entry into some Bachelor Degree qualifications in Education. Admission is dependent on the completion of the course and the level of academic performance achieved. Advanced standing (credit transfer) may be granted for these awards.

Traineeships are also available at some campus locations for both the Certificate III and Diploma level qualifications.

Learning Options

At TAFE Illawarra we offer a number of training options.  There are limited numbers of places available in the Child and Family studies courses which are offered through face to face delivery, where students attend class on campus, part time delivery and through flexible delivery. An on the job work placement component is mandatory for all courses.  In the flexible delivery mode, priority is given to people already working in Children’s Services for the available places.

The Flexible delivery Diploma program at TAFE Illawarra is unique because of its online course delivery it offers students an opportunity to work in the industry and study at the same time. Students are monitored and supported by a TAFE Child and Family studies teacher. Workshops may also be utilised in this style of learning to assist students in developing their practical skills for this course.

Tafe Illawarra is the right choice for you if you would like to develop your English Language skills and learn about Australian culture.

Our English Language courses cover, speaking, listening, reading and writing, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. Improving your English language can help you to get a job or participate in further education at TAFE and University.

At TAFE Illawarra our English language course are available at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.  You can gain qualifications from a statement of attendance through to Certificate 4 which is equivalent to 6.5 IELTS.

There are no formal requirements for English Language courses. However, before you enrol you need to have an interview with an English Language teacher who will assess your English language level and place you in an appropriate English Language course.

Some students  begin their English Language learning at TAFE Illawarra in the Adult Migrant English Program or AMEP. After AMEP these students may continue to learn English at TAFE Illawarra.

All our teachers are well qualified and very experienced in teaching English.  They are committed to making your time at TAFE Illawarra a successful and positive experience. You can study part time or full time. Most students attend face to face classes on campus. Students are encouraged to do extra hours of independent study at home, using teacher developed  English language blogs.

If you have ever considered a career in Events, Tourism or Hospitality, TAFE Illawarra offers a broad range of courses in commercial cookery, hospitality, food and beverage, travel and tourism and events.

Seeking a career in the beauty and hairdressing industry, you have come to the right place.  TAFE Illawarra offers beauty and hairdressing courses to the highest professional standards.  Designed for people who want to gain employment as a hairdressing salon assistant, hairdressing receptionist, hairdressing apprentice, beautician, nail technician, beauty therapist apprentice, or a salon manager.

There are a range of career opportunities available, from work in hair and beauty salons to work with magazines, photographic studios, and theatre and television companies. You could even run your own business.

Depending on your prior qualifications, your existing training could be considered for recognition.  Once you finish a course you can get advanced standing in other Beauty and Hairdressing Training Package qualifications, such as Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy, as well as appropriate Retail Training Package qualifications, Certificate III in Hairdressing and Certificate IV in Hairdressing.

Retail sales go hand in hand with the beauty and hairdressing industry, so beauty therapists and hair stylists need to be confident when doing the selling. This comes from a good product knowledge and understanding of client's needs.

Apprenticeship courses are available at TAFE Illawarra in both beauty and hairdressing.  Apprentices will undertake routine tasks in the initial stages, assisting senior operators with client preparation and sterilisation and maintenance of equipment.  As apprentices gain experience they carry out more complex tasks under supervision.  An apprenticeship combines ‘on the job’ training with a salon, with the formal education and qualification being undertaken with TAFE Illawarra.

Careers

Pursuing a fulfilling career in Human Services (Community and Health) is easy at TAFE Illawarra which has courses in Aged Care, Nursing or Youth Work.

You will gain the knowledge and skills required to work in an aged care facility, as a community support worker, a home care assistant or a community care worker, as an enrolled nurse in a hospital or as a youth worker.

Aged care workers provide person centred care for older people in residential facilities and in their own homes.  Caring and supporting the older person involves working with an individualised plan, specific to the person’s physical needs as well as promoting the health and well being of that person.  There is a focus on maintaining independence, enabling the older person to be empowered to make decisions and to be involved.  There are specific groups of people requiring specialised skills and abilities, and these include people with dementia and people requiring palliative care towards the end of life.

Nurses are important members of the health care team and their primary role is providing patient care. Nurses need to develop skills to communicate with people, have knowledge of contemporary nursing practice, law and ethics, anatomy and physiology, acute and chronic health disorders, clinical nursing skills and medication management. A career in nursing will enable you to interact competently and professionally with other health professionals within acute and non-acute environments.

People who work or want to work to develop and coordinate programs designed to address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people may choose a career in Youth work.

Youth work is about helping young people make positive changes in their lives and developing their skills to maintain positive decisions in the future. While this can mean providing specific services such as accommodation, education, training and employment or counselling, youth work programs go beyond homelessness or drug and alcohol issues and are more about community development.

Pathways

TAFE Illawarra’s Pathway to Work or study courses are a great starting point if you want to get back into work or study but need to develop your skills and confidence.  Our courses can assist you to prepare for further education or training, improve your reading; writing or maths skills update your existing skills for work, or develop your career plan.

No matter what your starting point, you will work with experienced teachers and coordinators who will help you to develop your individual pathway. All of our courses will help you to develop strong employability skills such as communication, working in a team, problem solving, managing your time and using technology.

Pathways

Entry points and pathways vary for each person undertaking study in this area. Courses range from Certificate I through to Certificate IV.

Some students may choose to complete a basic computer literacy class prior to undertaking a Certificate II in Information Technology or a Certificate I in Preparation for Work and Study prior to completing a Certificate III in Aged Care.

Some courses are offered specifically for Women returning to work, with work experience playing a vital role. In these courses, women have the opportunity to identify their skills and interests and develop realistic career plans. Women’s courses are generally held during school hours and focus on building confidence as well as work skills.

Another pathway is the Certificate II in Preparation for Vocational and Further Study. This is an important qualification for those who need a Year 10 equivalent for entry into further education.

For all those who wish to prepare for a university degree to become teachers, nurses or even forensic scientists – to name just a few , the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation is an excellent choice.

Learning Options

A range of Pathway to Work or Study courses are offered at all TAFE Illawarra Campuses. Some are offered  off Campuses or online  through Adult Basic Education, Outreach and General Education.

Hi, you've come to the right place if you are looking to start, accelerate or change your career, to gain additional skills to re-enter the workforce or undertake future studies at university. You've made a good choice to study with TAFE Illawarra!

Careers: The music industry includes the areas of composition, production, performance, instrument making and repairing, broadcasting, music business, retailing and wholesaling, teaching, writing and research, arts administration, and libraries, archives and museums.

Pathways: Whatever your stage of education or career development we have a number of learning pathways available at TAFE Illawarra to support you to achieve your goals. Our courses start at Certificate II and progress to Advanced Diploma level in the areas of Music and Sound Production. For example, if you choose to commence your studies with the Certificate II in Music you might then wish to undertake the Certificate III in Music and follow the Music suite of courses to Advanced Diploma, or follow the Sound Production suite to Advanced Diploma. We also have an articulation arrangement with Charles Sturt University which gives Sound Production Diploma graduates the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Creative Industries in the equivalent of one year full time.

Learning Options: Most courses in Music and Sound Production are offered full time on campus, in an intensive mode to get you to your goal faster.

Recognition: An important part of what we do is support individuals to gain formal recognition for the knowledge and skills that that they have gained in the music industry or as a result of formal or other informal learning experiences. This recognition, if granted, can count towards completion of a qualification or allow advanced entry into diploma level courses.

Education is a life-long journey and our aim is to provide you with the opportunity to experience the best possible training that will support you to become “more than you can imagine”.
