Loretta Marlan - Event Management

Loretta Marlan

Age: 19

Qualification: Diploma in Event Management

Campus: Wollongong

What were you doing before you enrolled at TAFE? I began TAFE the year after I finished my HSC.

Why did you decide to enrol at TAFE?
I do a joint course through TAFE and the University of Wollongong (UOW) - a Bachelor of Business Administration at UOW and the Diploma in Event Management at TAFE. By choosing to study at university and TAFE, I am able to get both a degree and a diploma.

What made you decide to train for the career you have chosen?
I have always been interested in event management, and have fun organising events for various groups. I thought it would be beneficial to gain some qualifications and knowledge of the event management industry.

Do you think your training at TAFE will be a major factor in securing a (successful) career in your industry, or help you to move on to further study/training? How?
Yes. In an industry such as event management, it is important to have practical experience, as well as network with people in the industry. The diploma, as well as the work experience I have done through TAFE, will definitely help me to secure a successful career within the industry.

What is the most important thing that you have learnt from your training at TAFE?
I have learnt that it is important to have practical experience. I have learnt that you must have a personable personality and be able to talk to people from many different backgrounds. It is important that, even when the work-load seems too much, to keep going and work towards a successful event, and to know that you have a support network behind you.

What do you enjoy most about your training at TAFE? I enjoy the practical aspect of the course, and the friendly atmosphere. I find it very satisfying when I have worked with my classmates to organise a successful event.

What is your advice to others thinking about their career and future education? You should always do something you are passionate and excited about, and never do anything just for convenience. If you are studying something you enjoy, it is always easier! If you enjoy it, you should stick to what you are doing and not quit at the first sign of hard work!!
