Permanent Full Time Teacher

The Illawarra Institute employs approximately 1200 full-time teachers. Our teachers are highly qualified and hold industry experience relevant to their teaching role. Teachers are supported by a head teacher or teacher-in-charge, the faculty management team, the Teaching and Learning Initiatives unit, the Professional Development unit, and administration and support staff.

The role of a TAFE teacher is challenging but can be very rewarding. Our teachers are encouraged to be innovative. In addition to facilitating classroom delivery, there are also opportunities for facilitating online learning, workplace learning and assessment, and commercial delivery to meet the changing needs of our clients. Teachers are provided with curriculum guidelines, assessment guidelines, delivery strategies, supervision, and professional development.

Additionally, employment in TAFE provides interesting career pathways for teachers. For example, teachers may seek progression to Teacher-in-Charge, Head Teacher, Coordinator Learning Initiatives, Assistant Faculty Director, Faculty Director. There are many other career pathways.

Full-time teachers are required to deliver programs for 20 hours per week with a further 10 hours provided for preparation and administration. Additionally, teachers are entitled to 4 weeks annual leave and 7 weeks concessional leave.

How are full-time TAFE Teachers selected?

Applicants are selected on merit. This means that a selection panel including an independent member will review applications to determine whether the applicant meets the selection criteria. This is called shortlisting. In some cases where there are highly competitive applicants the panel will undertake a competitive cull. This means that only outstanding applicants will be selected for interview.

Applicants may also be required to undertake other forms of assessment such as skills testing prior to the interview.

When submitting an application for a teaching position, applicants will be required to demonstrate how they meet the following or similar selection criteria.

  • Minimum formal (educational) requirements that are necessary for the effective performance in the relevant teacher position, or as required by legislation or industrial instruments; and qualifications that are necessary in order to work in the industry or occupation relevant to the discipline area, where prescribed by a government, industry or professional body.
  • Two years current (post degree) five years (post trade) or equivalent industrial/ vocational experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining professional currency.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in a wide range of educational, industrial or community environments.
  • Commitment and ability to facilitate learning in an adult environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a team environment.
  • Proven strengths in problem solving and change management.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills applicable to an educational setting.

Part-time Casual Teacher

In addition to the full-time teaching establishment, faculties recruit teachers who are suitably qualified and experienced for inclusion on a part-time teacher suitability list for the relevant teaching areas. The teaching sections employ teachers from these lists as required. Teaching hours vary depending on the needs of the section.

To be placed on a suitability list for part-time casual teaching, you will need to hold the relevant tertiary qualifications for the discipline, have industry experience, and have completed a current Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training or equivalent*.

*Clarification in regard to equivalence for the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Part-time casual teachers are required to meet, as a condition of employment, the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Training Framework. Applicants will meet the requirements where they:


(i) hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA 40104) from the Training and Assessment Training Package.

Note: Part-time casual teachers who have completed a course of teacher education in which all of the competencies in the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104) are embedded are considered to meet the Australian Qualifications Training Framework requirements.

OR

(ii) hold the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training from the superseded Training Package for Assessment and Workplace Training (BSZ98), or are able to demonstrate that prior to 23 November 2005 they have been assessed as holding equivalent competencies to the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training from the Training Package for Assessment and Workplace Training (BSZ98).
