Copyright and Plagiarism
What is Copyright?
Copyright gives authors and creators legal protection over their works including the right to grant or deny permission to others to reproduce it. An idea cannot be copyright, only the way that idea is expressed in a work. A 'work' can range from a novel to a painting, a photograph or computer software and much more.
More information about copyright:
- The Australian Copyright Council provides information sheets about copyright in Australia.
- Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is an Australian copyright management company that administers the copying of print material by educational institutions, and other bodies.
Information about copyright for TAFE staff:
- Copyright - What you can copy details the statutory hard copy educational licence for TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute.
- The NSW DET Copyright Unit
- The Copyright Kitchen is a resource for those working in vocational education and training (VET) who deal with copyright issues in their day-to-day work.
What is Plagiarism?
- Plagiarism occurs when a person uses another person's ideas, writing or work and does not acknowledge the original source. To pretend that another person's work is your own is unethical and dishonest.
- Students are expected to acknowledge the work of others, most often by using in-text citations and a list of sources used in all written assessment tasks. Please contact your teacher for specific requirements. A general guide to in-text citations and bibliographies is available at your library.
- The HSC Board of Studies has produced an excellent online training program - HSC: All My Own Work covering scholarship principles and practices, acknowledging sources, plagiarism, copyright and working with others.
