How do I join the library?
  • The library service is available free to all current TAFE NSW staff and students, including those enrolled at OTEN. Your TAFEcard is also your library card and should always be presented when borrowing.
  • OTEN students should bring their enrolment confirmation letter to the campus administration office during office hours to obtain a TAFEcard, or if you are a TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute off-campus student, contact your closest campus library for information about services that are available to you.
  • Part-time staff may be asked to show a current payslip or a letter of introduction from their Head Teacher.
  • Members of the public can join the library as Community borrowers (conditions and fees apply), and students and staff of the University of Wollongong can join as Reciprocal borrowers (conditions and fees apply).

What can I borrow and for how long?
  • Students may borrow a total of 15 items (state-wide) with a limit on some formats. Student loan periods are: books and journals - 2 weeks; videos, DVDs and CDs - 1 or 2 weeks (depending on the campus library).
  • Staff may borrow any number of items with a limit on some formats. Staff loan periods are: books - 4 weeks; journals - 2 weeks; videos, DVDs and CDs - 1 or 2 weeks (depending on the campus library).
  • Renewals can be made in person, by telephone or online using the library catalogue. Two renewals are allowed, as long as the items are not overdue or reserved by another customer.
  • You can view your loans and holds and renew your loans online. You will need your TAFEcard barcode number and a password (PIN) - ask at the library.
  • Staff are reminded that the number of library resources is limited with students also requiring access, so you are asked to return items to the library as soon as you have finished with them.
  • Note: Restrictions may apply to heavily used items. Contact your local campus library for further details.

What are my responsibilities?
  • The conditions of use of the library service for students and staff will be given to you when you first borrow - please read these carefully.
  • Students - TAFE NSW students should refer to the Student Discipline (Library Resource Materials) Policy for details, which includes a penalty of $10 per overdue item for items not returned after 21 days from the due date.
  • All damaged items must be paid for. You must notify the campus administration office and the campus library immediately of any change of address or if you lose your card. A replacement charge of $20 applies to lost TAFEcards.
  • The Internet conditions of use should also be viewed before using the computers for the first time. More information is available in the document: Use of TAFE NSW Internet and Intranet Services.
  • Staff - You are responsible for items borrowed and are required to pay for or replace material lost or damaged while on loan to you. Borrowing privileges will be suspended if items are not returned on time. Failure to return library materials or pay the replacement costs is a breach of TAFE staff regulations.

Can I borrow from other TAFE libraries?
  • You can use your TAFEcard to borrow from any NSW TAFE library. You must, however, return items to the library from which they were borrowed.
  • Course related materials not held at the campus where you are studying or teaching may be borrowed for you from another TAFE library. This is called an interlibrary loan. Students may request up to 2 items at a time and staff may request up to 4 items at a time. At least one week's notice is required.
  • Please contact your local campus library for more information about interlibrary loans or complete the online request form.
