Information Skills Program | ||
All libraries offer an Information Skills Program, that teaches you how to locate, evaluate and effectively use information. Please contact your Campus Librarian for details of the Information Skills Program at your campus. Scroll down for a brief outline of each session. Sessions generally take place in class groups but individual sessions are also available. These sessions are offered subject to the availability of resources, facilities and staff time. Introductory Library TourIntroduces students to library services and facilities, including a brief introduction to the library catalogue. All new students should take part in this basic session. Using the Library CatalogueCovers the use of the TAFE NSW library catalogue, including basic and power searching. Participants are shown how to view their own loans record and reservations, and how to renew loans online. Research SkillsCovers basic research skills such as understanding the assignment question, constructing a bibliography, searching the library catalogue, and locating appropriate library resources. Searching the InternetProvides an introduction to search engines and directories, as well as covering search strategies and how to evaluate the quality of information retrieved from the Internet. | Using Journal DatabasesIntroduces students to a range of online journal databases, which provide access to full-text magazine and newspaper articles and other quality information. The session can cover one database in depth or briefly introduce a number of databases. Using Standards OnlineCovers searching for Australian Standards using the Illawarra Institute's subscription service. Using the DET PortalIntroduces students to the DET Portal - the gateway to a variety of online services and applications including an email account, and Student e-Services - access to their own enrolment details and results. |
