How can I improve my information research skills?

  • Try an interactive guide that will take you step by step through the process of finding, evaluating and presenting information for your assignments. Guides are also available for a wide range of subject areas.
  • Take a library tour - they are available throughout the year. A short orientation to the library services and facilities is a great starting point for a successful life at TAFE.
  • Learn to use the library catalogue - it provides you with access to a wealth of educational and recreational resources. Here is a guide - or you can ask the library staff to show you. We will teach you how to use the catalogue and how to locate what you need - fast!
  • Use the online subject guides - they contain:
    • Quality websites - recommended by teachers and librarians
    • Selected databases - access to journal articles and other information online
    • Featured resources for loan - books, DVDs and more
    • Topic searches linked directly to the library catalogue
    • Research tips and referencing guides
  • Use the printed guides that are available at each library. These include subject guides to local collections, as well as guides to using eResources and the Internet.

Introductory Library Tour

Using Journal Databases

Introduces students to library services and facilities, including a brief introduction to the library catalogue. All new students should take part in this basic session.Introduces students to a range of online journal databases (eResources) which provide access to full-text magazine and newspaper articles and other quality information. The session can cover one database in depth or briefly introduce a number of databases.
Using the Library CatalogueReferencing and Bibliographies
Covers the use of the TAFE NSW library catalogue, including basic and power searching. Participants are shown how to view their own loans record and reservations, and how to renew loans online.Covers referencing and bibliographies, plagiarism, the Harvard referencing style and how to locate
the details needed to cite a book / journal or newspaper article / non-book items / Internet pages.
Research Skills Using the DET Portal
Covers basic research skills such as understanding the assignment question, constructing a bibliography, searching the library catalogue, and locating appropriate library resources.Introduces students to the DET Portal - the gateway to DET online services -which includes an email account, and Student e-Services - access to a student's own enrolment details and results.
Searching the Internet Using Standards Online
Provides an introduction to search engines and directories, as well as covering search strategies and how to evaluate the quality of information retrieved from the Internet.

Covers searching for Australian Standards using the Illawarra Institute's subscription service.

Note: These sessions are offered subject to the availability of resources, facilities and staff time. Sessions generally take place in class groups, but individual sessions are also available. Contact your library or teachers can complete our online booking form for library tours and classes.
