School based Apprenticeships & Traineeships

A review in 2005 found that vocational education and training (VET) in schools is helping to increase student retention to year 12, making students more work ready, increasing their engagement in learning, and helping them to make better transitions to work and further study.

The NSW Department of Education and Training is now building on the success of its VET in schools program by offering even more vocational opportunities for young people while they are at school. As well as traineeships, school based apprenticeships will be available to NSW students from 2007. These part time apprenticeships will be offered in a range of traditional trades where there are identified skill shortages.
