TVET (TAFE while at School)

What is TVET?

TVET courses allow senior-secondary school students in years 11 and 12 to study selected TAFE vocational courses while still at school. TVET courses classified as Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) can contribute to your University Admissions Index (UAI). TVET courses provide you with dual accreditation from the NSW Board of Studies and TAFE NSW.

By enrolling in a TVET course you can complete your HSC and gain practical work skills at the same time. Having your HSC and part of or a full TAFE NSW qualification is a great way to build your career in a range of industries, making you a more attractive worker for any future employer. The skills gained in a TVET course provides you with a head start in a career.

Why TAFE?

How is TAFE different from school?

TAFE is an adult learning environment. You will be encouraged to be self-directed, self-motivated and to assume responsibility for your learning progress. You will need to show commitment, both in terms of attendance and attitude to learning, and a willingness to become fully involved in the learning process.

How will a TAFE course benefit you?

TVET courses are designed to lead to higher TAFE courses. You will have an opportunity to obtain advanced standing and/or continuing student status on successful completion of your study.

TVET courses will enhance your entry into the labour market. This is particularly true for courses with a workplacement component. Industry recognises the quality of TAFE trained workers. TVET courses aim to prepare you for lifelong learning.

Will you get a TAFE certificate at the end of the course?

TVET students may receive two sets of credentials at the end of their course. If you meet the Board of Studies HSC requirements, the TVET course will be included on your HSC certificate. If you meet the TAFE requirements you will receive a testamur from TAFE NSW. Depending on the course and the modules successfully completed, the testamur will be either an Academic Transcript or a Certificate.
