Multicultural Education Services

If you are from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background and English is not your first language, our Multicultural Co-ordinator can provide you with support.

Support services include:

  • interpreters under certain circumstances (eg. trade testing and course information)
  • advice on the recognition of overseas qualifications
  • learner support to students in Certificate III level courses and above
  • information on English language programs and culturally specific community services.

Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) - Free English classes for new migrants

If you’re a new migrant and you are eligible, the Adult Migrant English Program can provide you with up to 510 hours of English tuition. TAFE Illawarra can check if you are eligible for the program and book you into a class. For further information, Course Information on 131 601.

 

AMEP Free Course

If you’re an eligible adult migrant or refugee, the AMEP can provide you with basic English training to help you settle successfully in Australia. During this AMEP free course you will also learn about Australian society, culture and customs.

To help you prepare for work and vocational study, Pathways to Employment Programs are also available.

How many hours study can I do?

As an AMEP participant you will be offered at least 510 hours of free English tuition.

 

Am I eligible for this course?

Your eligibility is determined by your visa and passport details. Please call the AMEP office on 4229 0025 to find out if you are eligible.

 

What will I learn?

AMEP English courses are based on the nationally Certificates I, II and III Spoken and Written English (CSWE).

 

Is childcare available?

Wollongong and Shellharbour Campuses offer Childcare Centre facilities.

If you require childcare, please complete an application form at your pre-training interview. Referrals will be completed at your initial interview and Lady Gowrie Child Centre will then make the arrangements. You will be notified once a place is available.

 

How many hours can I attend each week?

You will attend between 15 to 20 hours per week. Classes are held between 9:00am to 2:30pm weekdays.

 

How soon can I start?

There is a new intake approximately every five weeks. You will need to have an interview before starting class.

 

Can I work while studying?

Yes, we are happy to adapt a study program to fit with your work schedule.

 

What other services are available to me?

You may also be able to access:

  • distance learning
  • online learning
  • educational and career counselling
  • translation of documents.

 

Is a transport concession available?

If you are a full time student studying 20 hours or more per week you are eligible for a transport concession.

 

Who funds this program?

This program is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
